Associate Fellow Of Industrial Health(A.F.I.H.)


Under clause 73 (W) of the Factories Act Amended in 1987, Medical officers working or intending to work in Factory, either in full – time or part-time basis should have qualifications included in schedule to the Indian Medical Degrees Act of 1916 or in the Schedules to the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and must possess an additional qualification like Diploma in Industrial Health (DIH) or three months full time Certificate Training in Industrial Health (AFIH), recognised by the Central and State Governments. The Associate Fellow of Industrial Health (AFIH) course is approved by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India and the examination will be conducted by them and certificates will be issued by DGFASLI (Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes), Ministry of Labour, Government of India.


Objectives Of The Course


  • To enable the Doctors to identify the working environment hazards and manage the Occupational / Health Disorders/ Diseases encountered in various industries in the country.
  • To contain the industrial injuries caused by chemical intoxication in general and in hazardous process industries in particular.
  • To preventive and control measures to solve occupational health problems.
  • To advise, supervise and participate in the national occupational health programmes for the health protection of industrial workers, thereby improving national productivity and prosperity.


Duration of Course


Theoretical inputs will cover the following areas: Occupational health, occupational medicine, health promotion, health screening, toxicology, ergonomics, occupational physiology, psycho-social factors in industry, psychological guidance and counselling, legislations in occupational health, communications, productivity and occupational health, training programmes and health education, health information systems, ILO radiographs of pneumoconiosis, occupational diseases causation, clinical features, diagnosis and prevention and surveillance of work environment using industrial hygiene methods.


Practical’s will involve carrying out health screening procedures such as vision screening, spirometry, conducting field studies in industrial hygiene, toxicological experiments, etc.


  • Project work at work place will be required to be carried out. At the end of the programme, Candidates will be required to make a presentation on the same.
  • Industrial visits to important sectors in chemical, coal, oil refining, tanning, fabrication and paper manufacturing will be an important part of the curriculum.


Eminent faculties in occupational health and allied areas handling the classes will be an added advantage of this programme.


Eligibility For Admission

  1. Project work at work place will be required to be carried out. At the end of the programme, Candidates will be required to make a presentation on the same.
  2. Industrial visits to important sectors in chemical, coal, oil refining, tanning, fabrication and paper manufacturing will be an important part of the curriculum.

Mode Of Selection

  1. Interested candidates should apply in the prescribed form. along with Xerox copies of Certificates and Documents ( Envelopes containing application should be super scribed on the top as “Application for Admission to AFIH course ”.)
  2. Applicants working in Govt./Public Sector undertakings/Autonomous Bodies, etc., should apply through proper channel. Applications complete in all respects, along with attested photo copies of certificates should be sent to the Course Director, AFIH COURSE.
  3. Last date for receipt of application is November 20th, Incomplete or ineligible applications will be summarily rejected. Results of selection will be intimated individually in the Last week of November .
  4. Short listed candidates after preliminary screening will be called for interview at Pune.(No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview. Calling for interview does not guarantee selection. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final and binding. Legal dispute, if any, shall be settled only at Pune.)
  5. List of selected candidates will be displayed on the Notice Board after the completion of interviews.
  6. The candidates will have to join the course with full payment of fees within 7 days.


RESERVATION : As per Government of India Rules.


FACULTIES : Faculties of the course are highly qualified and experienced personnel in their respective fields and shall be drawn from LMRC, Medical Colleges of Pune, University of Pune, Industrial Houses, National Safety Council and Central Labour Institute, Mumbai and Management Institutes of Pune.


EXAMINATION : On completion of the three months course, examination will be conducted by the Examination Board, DGFASLI, Mumbai in Theory, Practical, Project Report and vice – versa. The candidates will have to secure 50% marks in all the separate subjects and aggregate to pass the examinations. Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of AFIH, Ministry of Labour, Government of India and Certificate of Registration by DGFASLI and LMRC. The same will qualify to fulfill the requirements as stipulated in this regard in the relevant Factories Act and Rules framed there under in various states in the country.


ATTENDANCE : 75% attendance in Theory classes, Practical, Project Work, Clinical Training, Education Visits etc. are required to be eligible to appear in the examination.


LIBRARY : Lokmanya Medical Research Centre has well equipped libraries with Informative and latest books and journals, periodicals related to the occupational health subject. Every candidate will be issued Admit Card for the purpose.


HOSTEL AND CANTEEN : Non – Family sharing accommodation will be arranged on request by the desirous candidates at his / her own cost on as per actual cost.
